Weekly Dose of Sunset
Because I love sunsets🌇
Did you know that the beautiful colors of the sunset are a result of the Earth's atmosphere interacting with sunlight? The colour(s) of the sunsets will depend on a few things. The next time you happen upon an extraordinarily beautiful sunset, have a think about what might have caused it. The folliwng snippet will give some clue
Rayleigh Scattering: During the day, the sun will appear white because its light is made up of various colors, also called wavelengths, of light. The atmosphere will scatter shorter wavelengths of light (blue and violet) better than the longer wavelengths (red and orange). At sunset, when the sun is lower in the sky, the light has to pass through a thicker layer of the atmosphere and this increased path length intensifies the scattering effect and thereby causing more of the shorter wavelengths to be scattered out of our line of sight. This leaves the longer wavelengths, such as reds and oranges, to dominate the sky.
Path Length: The longer path of sunlight through the atmosphere allows for more scattering, there by scattering shorter wavelengths and emphasizing longer wavelengths.
Particles and Pollution: Particles and pollutants in the atmosphere can also affect sunset colors. Tiny particles like dust and water droplets can scatter sunlight and contribute to the dispersion of different colors, creating a more vivid display.
Atmospheric Conditions: The state of the atmosphere, including its moisture content and the presence of clouds, can influence sunset colors. Moisture and clouds can scatter sunlight differently, leading to variations in color intensity and patterns.
Geographical Factors: If you are wondering why you are not seeing some of the vivid sunsets some people are, then this might be the reason. The geographical location can impact the quality of sunsets. For instance, locations with less pollution and clearer air might showcase more vibrant and saturated colors.
Optical Effects: Optical effects, such as the bending of light due to atmospheric conditions, can contribute to the unique and changing colors observed during sunsets.
